Better Is One Handful // Notes for Jan 11

Better-TitleMost of us don’t think of envy as horrible things because it often drives us to pursue good things. It often drives us to pursue what we call the good life. We see others with new cars and it makes us want new cars, we see others going to cool vacation places and we want to go to cool vacation places. We see what activities other parents have their kids involved in and so we sign up our kids too.

And there’s nothing wrong with new cars and cool vacations and my kids getting involved, as long as God has all of your heart. Envy may not sound like a big deal. Because, what’s the big deal as long as it drives us to improve our lives and pursue good things?

But some of you, if you’re real honest, you have financial debt because of this. You have purchased things, you’re wearing things, driving things, you’ve eaten things and gone places and the only reason you did it was because you saw other people doing it.

Envy causes compromises.

Memory Verse: Better one handful with tranquillity than two handfuls with toil and chasing after the wind.(Ecclesiastes 4:6)

The Hebrew text is full of imagery with this verse. So this is what Solomon is saying, “It’s better to have one hand open.” The implication here is that God can put in it or take out of it whatever God chooses. It is better to have one hand open and hold what only one hand can hold than to have two fists clenched hanging onto everything you can get.

When you begin to reach for more, ask yourself, “What am I compromising in order to get more?” This is a great way to check your motives.

Discussion Questions:

1) When you were a child, what did you see other kids have that you really wanted?

2) What is your greatest ambition in life right now? What are you doing to pursue it? Is that ambition motivated at all by comparing yourself to others?

3) In what areas of your life are you most tempted to want what others have?

Read Ecclesiastes 4:4-8

4) What speaks to you and your situation the most from this passage?

5) Have you ever been exhausted or broke from trying to keep up with friends or neighbors? If so, explain.

6) How does envy affect how you view yourself? your family?

7) What is one thing you can do this week to allow the thought of tranquility—peace—to help you pause in the midst of the envy trap?

Resolve Kick-Off // Jan 14

IMG_3099Middle and High School students, our student ministry Resolve is kicking back off for this semester, and we’re doing it big! Wednesday, January 14th, will be our first meeting of the new school year, and a glow-party edition of Resolve! Wear neon, and bring friends! If you have a Middle or High School student, encourage them to be a part of what’s happening at Resolve all year long. Our heart is that students will be challenged and impacted as they learn about God’s heart for their lives, and worship alongside a community of friends and leaders who are there to guide and encourage.

For more information, check out our Resolve Facebook page, or click the ‘Students’ tab on our LifeBridge homepage.

Better Is One Day // Notes for Jan 4

Better-TitleHow many of you want to have a better year this year than last? Of course we do, right? You’d be crazy not to want to have a better year than last year.

The tragic thing though, is for so many people in our culture, people are pursuing what we call the good life. We want nice things, we want comfort, we want convenience and we want fun. And there’s nothing wrong with those things, as long as God has all of your heart. But the tragedy is that so many people are settling for the good life when God has something indescribably better for you.

Key Idea: You’re going to have to let go of the good to grab a hold of the better.

Memory Verse: 1 “How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! 2a My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord;”(Psalm 84:1-2a)

If better is one day with God, how do we have a day with Him? How do we have a day with God?

Live with an ongoing, unending awareness of God’s presence.

17 “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus,”

The Apostle Paul, (Colossians 3:17a)

Now, that raises the question, how do we go and just have a day with God? Here are two habits to develop:

Habit #1: Constant communication with God.

17 “pray continually,” – The Apostle Paul, (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

Habit #2:A daily desperation for God.

1 “How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord Almighty! 2a My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God.” (Psalm 84:1-2)

Reflection Questions: (Great for Group Discussion)

Icebreaker:  Which is better: a day at the beach or a day in the mountains? Bringing back spandex or bringing back big hair?

  1. Describe what your intentional time with God looks like.
  2. How can you develop an ongoing, unending awareness of God?
  3. What habit do you feel you need to improve? Constant communication or daily desperation?
  4. What are some of the things keeping you from having an ongoing, unending awareness of God? What will do you to remove these distractions?
  5. In what ways do you think your life would be better if you lived with an ongoing, unending awareness of God’s presence?
  6. What good things do you need to let go of so that you can grab hold of the better in your life?
